Veterinary Services provides training to investigative staff via a combination of regularly scheduled didactic and hands-on sessions as well as a variety of written instructional materials for inter- and intra-department use. Investigative staff training includes IACUC-mandated new investigator training. VS oversees species specific, hands-on, wet labs and special technique sessions. VS staff provide hands-on training seminars for basic instruction in animal handling and various techniques, such as blood withdrawal and injections (i.e. Rodents 101, 102, 103, and 201); anesthesia training; and surgical training. Preclinical Services provides the facilities and technical assistance needed to support research procedures. PS can be hired in a number of capacities depending on the desired scope of work. PS can perform a single task or conduct an entire study including collection and processing of data and results. The PS team provides services for a variety of routine in vivo testing, including minor and major surgeries, anesthetic support, drug administration, collection of tissues, and euthanasia of animals. PS assistance includes, but is not limited to: pharmacokinetics, tumor studies, efficacy studies, immunogenicity studies, toxicity studies, and a variety of other special models as requested by clients. PS is the institutional resource regarding the choice and source of animals, animal models, analgesics, anesthetics, drugs, and matters of animal anatomy, physiology, nutrition and husbandry. PS will also work with individuals to coordinate work and act as a liaison between other Tufts Comparative Medicine Services and University core facility services. Comparative Pathology Services is a full-service, multi-discipline, diagnostic and research pathology laboratory offering clinical and anatomic pathology services. CPS services offered include: hematology (complete blood counts with white blood cell differentials, serum biochemical panels); parasitology; microbiology (bacterial and fungal identification, antimicrobial sensitivity); analysis of urine and other body fluids; serology for numerous bacterial, viral and parasitic infectious agents; and environmental monitoring. All tests are performed by qualified laboratory professionals trained in veterinary laboratory techniques. CPS also has access to a network of reference laboratories to provide tests that are not performed in-house. The Animal Histology Core provides complete histology services including tissue processing, paraffin embedding, and sectioning. Routine stains such as hematoxylin & eosin and special histochemical and immunohistochemical stains are available. Rodent Breeding Services is available to aid investigators in the creation, propagation, and maintenance of rodent breeding colonies. Individual services include consultation, mating, animal identification, weaning, collection of samples for DNA analysis, and record keeping. The Preclinical Imaging Core provides equipment and expertise for molecular and anatomical imaging for basic research and translational studies in live small animal models. Major imaging modalities available include bioluminescence, fluorescence, micro-CT, ultrasound, and MRI. The Zebrafish and Aquatics Core specializes in zebrafish research, boasting a capacity of over 1500 zebrafish tanks and the ability to support other aquatic species including but not limited to axolotls, killifish, cave fish and cichlids. |
